Multi-agency conference pledges committment to ending serious and organised crime in Sefton.

The Sefton Safer Communities Partnership hosted representatives from Merseyside Police, Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCB), National Probation Service, youth groups, community and voluntary sector services, councillors and other partners for a Serious and Organised (SOC) Crime Conference in Sefton.

The event, held at Linacre Methodist Mission and part funded by the Merseyside Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), aimed to discuss how we can all work together to support families and young people at risk of getting involved in SOC, what early intervention is available including education, employment and training opportunities, as well as how can we collectively tackle gang culture in Sefton.

This improved, partnership-led approach will hopefully discourage our young people from getting involved in criminality by providing them with positive alternatives as well as encouraging communities to feel confident in speaking to us and sharing intelligence so we can bring offenders to justice.

Superintendent Graeme Robson said: “We know a large amount of people living in Sefton are decent, law-abiding people, who have every right to live in a safe and happy environment. However, here in Sefton, we face some challenges around SOC, particularly in South Sefton. This, accompanied by people living in deprivation, is unfortunately a perfect recipe for our young people to be at risk of exploitation - and that needs to urgently change.

“Currently, there are multiple organised crime groups (OCG) operating in Sefton who think violence as well as gun and knife crime is the answer to their problems and this couldn’t be further from the truth. We must come together to break down these groups and not give them the royalties and publicity they desire as this really isn’t a life young people should aspire to have.

“In addition to this, we need to break down this “wall of silence” found in Sefton, where communities don’t want to speak to police or report incidents. We need to collectively educate young people that the police and our partners are here to protect them, to offer them a safe place to confide in and we have the resources to support them, giving them the anonymity if they need it and bringing them the justice and tranquillity they deserve.

“A part of this is demonstrated through our heightened policing response aimed at tackling serious and violent crime dubbed ‘Operation Target’. This was launched over a year ago and has seen dedicated resources proactively disrupting criminal groups, removing weapons from our streets, carrying out warrants, days of action and gang injunctions.

“In addition, our Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) has also been fundamental in identifying opportunities to help children, ensuring young people who are surrounded by criminal activity through no fault of their own, do not view a life of criminality as attractive or inevitable.

“This event shows the public that despite the challenges, we are committed to facing them head on. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners and ensure residents are free from harm.”

In the last 18 months alone, officers have made a number of arrests for gun related incidents, recovered 15 firearms just in Sefton, conducted numerous roadside operations, stop and searches, letter drops and utilised resources in our Targeted, Mounted and Firearms teams as well as plain clothed officers, underwater search unit and Dogs Section to ensure wherever criminals may be operating, we have the means to disrupt them and bring them to justice.

Supt. Graeme Robson concluded: “Since 2016, just in Sefton, we have also welcomed prison sentences totalling in excess of 300 years for criminals involved in organised crime including drugs and firearms offences. This makes today’s event even more important to showcase the ways our partners are working together to identify preventative measures we can put in place to deter young people from getting involved in serious crime and also ending up with a lengthy prison sentence.

“We continue to ask the public to come forward and please speak to us. There is no shame in wanting to make your neighbourhood as safe as it can be but we can only do this if we work together.”

Chris White from Sefton Council added: "Sefton council believe that supporting our communities in becoming resilient to Serious and Organised Crime can only be achieved by working together in partnership with a wide range of organisations. We hope that this event and problem-solving session will help us to develop plans and actions that when delivered will ensure our communities feel safe.”
